Two killed when World War II vintage plane crashes in Texas

Two people onboard a vintage World War II fight plane died when it crashed into a parking lot of an apartment complex in Texas.

The Federal Aviation Administration said it is investigating the crash Saturday afternoon of a North American P-51D in Fredericksburg, which is 78 miles west of Austin.

The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang is an American long-range, single-seat fighter-bomber used during World War II and the Korean War by American soldiers.

One of those killed was a veteran, according to the National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg.

"We are saddened by the unfortunate accident that happened this afternoon," the museum posted on Twitter. "At this time we have no further information."

The museum conducted its November WWII Pacific Combat Program on Saturday morning.

"Hear the rattle of machine gun fire, the echoing blast of grenades and feel the searing heat of the flamethrower as the joint US forces take the Japanese controlled hill," the museum posted on its website.

Another show also was scheduled for Sunday.

The plane crashed at about 3:15 p.m. Saturday. Sgt. Orlando Moreno, of the Department of Public Transportation Sgt. Orlando Moreno confirmed the two deaths to the San Antonio Express-News.

Terrance Baber told KTBC-TV the crash happened in the parking lot of the Friendship Place Apartments.
