Malaysia criticises Australia for Jerusalem embassy move
Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has criticised his Australian
counterpart Scott Morrison who has said that he is “open” to the idea of
moving his country’s embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
Australia is set to decide on whether the move will go ahead or not by
Christmas.
Mohamad made the remarks at a press conference held after his meeting
with Morrison on the sidelines of the Asean summit in Singapore.
Mohamad said he discussed with Morrison Australia’s intention to
transfer its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, and its
recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
The Malaysian Prime Minister pointed out that Australia’s transfer of
its embassy to Jerusalem is tantamount to recognising Israel’s terrorist
practices:
“I pointed out that in dealing with terrorism one has to know the
causes. Adding to the cause for terrorism is not going to be helpful” he
said.
